With some states beginning to reopen, it feels like our nation is closing the door on COVID-19. But, we can’t just go back to “normal.”  Through all this, employment has been one of the biggest challenges. The depth and reach of the crisis of unemployment and underemployment in this country continue beyond COVID and the stories of the people who are the most impacted are being ignored. Until now.

"If you’re like me, you agree that this last year has been terrifying. With some states beginning to end their pandemic unemployment benefits, it feels like our nation is closing the door on COVID-19. But, our lives don’t just magically start to go back to “normal.” Most of the folks I knew weren’t even thriving before the pandemic began.

Through all this, employment has been one of the biggest challenges. I know for a fact there are millions of working people who want to go back to work. But, we can’t just take any wage, with unpredictable hours and no benefits, not after this year.

I want to go to work. I also want to feed my kids. I also want to figure out my housing. I also need a wage that is similar to the unemployment benefits I received during the pandemic. I cannot just take any job. I need a good one. That’s my story."
